"No tax on tips" is the most searched tax change of the year, and for employees it is roughly what it sounds like. For the self-employed it is narrower: it cuts your income tax on tips, and leaves your self-employment tax exactly where it was.
Here is who qualifies, and what it is actually worth.
The short answer
Self-employed people in a tipped occupation can deduct up to $25,000 of tips from federal income tax for 2025 to 2028, phasing out above $150,000 of MAGI ($300,000 joint). It does not reduce self-employment tax, so every tip still costs about 14% in Social Security and Medicare.
The rules in one place
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Maximum deduction | $25,000 a year |
| Years | Tax years 2025 to 2028 |
| Phase-out | Shrinks by $100 per $1,000 of MAGI over $150,000 ($300,000 joint) |
| Where it goes | Schedule 1-A, alongside the standard deduction |
| Itemizing needed? | No |
| Other requirements | Valid Social Security number; married couples must file jointly |
| Self-employed limit | No more than your net income from the business that earned the tips |
The IRS summary of the deduction confirms the cap, the phase-out thresholds, the joint-filing rule and the self-employed income limit.
Do you qualify if you are self-employed?
Three tests.
1. Your occupation is on the list. Treasury's final regulations list more than 70 occupations that customarily receive tips, in eight groups: food and beverage, entertainment and events, hospitality, home services, personal services, personal appearance and wellness, recreation and instruction, and transportation and delivery. Self-employed hairstylists, personal trainers and rideshare drivers are typical examples.
2. The tips are voluntary. The customer must choose the amount freely. A fixed service charge does not count unless the customer can remove or change it.
3. Your business is not a "specified service" business. Self-employed people in fields such as health, law, accounting, consulting, financial services and the performing arts are excluded, even if clients tip them.
Tips must be reported to count
The deduction applies to tips that are reported as income: on a 1099-NEC, 1099-K or 1099-MISC, or in your own records. Cash tips you never record cannot be deducted, and leaving them out of your income was never allowed anyway.
Self-employment tax still applies
This is the part most explainers skip. The deduction comes off your taxable income for income tax. It does nothing to Schedule SE.
Your tips are part of your business profit, and self-employment tax is charged on 92.35% of that profit at 15.3%. So every $1,000 of tips still costs about $141 in self-employment tax, deduction or not.
What it actually saves: a worked example
A single, self-employed hairstylist has $60,000 of profit in 2026, of which $12,000 is tips. She takes the standard deduction.
| Without the tips deduction | With it | |
|---|---|---|
| Self-employment tax | $8,478 | $8,478 |
| QBI deduction | $7,932 | $5,532 |
| Taxable income | $31,729 | $22,129 |
| Federal income tax | $3,559 | $2,407 |
| Total federal tax | $12,037 | $10,885 |
She saves $1,152, not the $1,440 you would expect from 12% of $12,000.
The reason is the QBI deduction. It is capped at 20% of taxable income, so when the tips deduction lowers her taxable income, her QBI deduction shrinks by $2,400 as well. Higher earners whose QBI deduction is not limited this way get closer to the full bracket rate.
State tax is separate
This is a federal deduction. Whether your state income tax follows it depends on the state, so check your state's rules before assuming the saving doubles.
What to do now
- Keep a tip log with dates and amounts, and keep it separate from your service income. You will need the split to claim the deduction.
- Lower your quarterly estimates to match. If the deduction will cut your income tax, your 15 January 2027 payment can reflect it. Your self-employment tax portion should not change.
- Check your occupation against the final Treasury list before counting on the deduction.
The quarterly tax calculator shows your self-employment tax and income tax separately, so you can see which part the tips deduction touches.
